Of The Western World beginnt.

English Version:

Totally unexpected and at the very last minute we get permission to attend the screening of Soul Boys Of The Western World + live concert from Spandau Ballet. So without a second thought we rushed into our car and drove towards Gent (B).
Easy say, not easy done.
We only had 2.5 hours to get there on time. People who are doing this trip on peak hours know what we are talking about. At this hour it is war on the roads around Brussels or Antwerp. So we had 2 choices to get in Gent.  We took the highway around Brussels and had only 30 minutes of traffic jam. SPANDAU BALLET - B- Gent, Vooruit (23.10.2014) + DokumentarfilmAt 2.5km from the Venue we stuck again in the traffic for 30 minutes. But luck is still with us as we came right on time at the cinema entrance. The documentary Soul Boys Of The Western World just started and we took our numbered seats.

Director of the documentary is George Hencken. She got all the freedom and used that too. Eventually she invested 450 hours. We see the original baby pictures of the band members. They all come from the working class. Just Ordinary guys from humble origins. At school they formed a band, because that is what the youth did in these early punk period. This was a very dark time in England with lots of Strikes and increasing unemployment.
In these early years of existence they changed their Band name a few times.
The last name was “Gentry”. Not a wisely chosen name and the band members luckily choose for Spandau Ballet after they saw this name somewhere in Berlin. Together with this last change they also changed completely their style of Music. From that point, Guitarist Gary Kemp writes all the songs.

They asked to occur in the club “Blitz” where they went regularly. It is here where the succes story starts for them with the song Muscle Bound. Despite the good songs, they have lots of competition from Duran Duran. They were considered as rivals from eachother but in the real world they were "drinking mates". Despite to this so called competition, Spandau Ballet scored 23 hit singles and sold over 25 million records. After years of touring, drugs and drinking, the small fractures are beginning to loom. Martin and Gary Kemp decide to take part in the film “The Krays” and it seems that this was the beginning of the end.

The final end seems to be when Gary Kemp is being summoned by the other band members. It is al about royalties. However, the judge decides otherwise and decides that all the songs are originated by Gary and so he has all of the rights.

Several years later, after watching old recordings, Gary realizes that they had a lot of fun together and a really nice time when they were together as a Band. These close friends have been through a lot.SPANDAU BALLET - B- Gent, Vooruit (23.10.2014) + Dokumentarfilm It is unfortunate that it has ended this way. Nobody wanted that it ended like this. Gary discusses his dream with his brother Martin and they succeeded to get everybody back in the band. In 2009, the group came back for a sold-out comeback tour. They also made 3 new songs and 1 of this we are getting to hear live later this evening.

After the documentary, the band members came together with the director on stage. Some questions are asked by the presenter. Martin indicates that he bought a Camera from £ 60.00 with his new fresh first earned money. Martin told that it is feeling better with each other now.
George Hencken makes even a photo of herself with the audience. Selfie-time! Singer Tony indicates that the Band is starting in January with producing a new Album.

Then it’s time for action.
For a hour they played their greatest hits. Soon, people are not sitting down anymore in this fantastic old cinema. Btw, this is in the same Venue were the famous Rewind Festival was hold. We are glad that they played the greatest hits as we all know them. So nothing changed over the years. Same fantastic songs, brilliant voice from Tony Hadley and marvelous saxophone play from Steven Antony Norman.

So after so many years with an interruption of 20 Years, Spandau Ballet is back on track and the whole world is going to know that with the upcoming Soul Boys Of The Western World Tour.
